SUGGESTED PRE NIGHT ACCOMMODATION

The Langham Melbourne

DEPARTURE TIME

7.30am

TRAIL DETAILS

6kms. 3 hours. Easy Grade 2.

TERRAIN

This walk stays high and behind the sea cliff for its full duration except where we descend to beautiful Crayfish Bay for a short break. There are a couple of sets of steps but mostly the track is very gently undulating with a firm, sandy surface.

WALK ITINERARY

Meet your guides at 7.20am at The Langham Melbourne.

From here, we transfer to the Great Ocean Road with short stops along the way at Anglesea and Apollo Bay, before arriving at Parker River.

Our first walk takes us to Point Franklin and Crayfish Bay. Crayfish Bay offers beautiful vistas and rock ledges hiding clear salt-water pools, and is often used for snorkelling and spear-fishing activities.

The area used to house some beach shacks, occupied by local fishermen, but these were removed when the area became part of the National Park. This section of the Great Ocean Walk mostly follows the cliff line and affords superb views of the ocean where the foliage clears; we may also see koalas relaxing in the trees.

The track is gently undulating, with a firm, sandy surface, interspersed with some sets of wooden steps/staircases.

Afterwards, we transfer further west along the coast to our accommodation at the stunning Alkina Lodge. Tonight enjoy dinner prepared by a caterer. Sit back and enjoy the company of your fellow companions in this modern and stylish accommodation.

TRAIL DETAILS

13km.  6 hours plus breaks. Medium to Hard Grade. Grade 3 Terrain.

TERRAIN

This walk commences in a forest setting but becomes progressively steeper as we approach Milanesia Beach. After a short beach walk, there is some steady climbing on a firm track of compacted earth with several sets of steps. It remains undulating, on a stable surface, for the entire journey today, giving the benefit of distant views ahead and behind us.

FLEXIBLE WALKING

Optional longer walk available: there may be an option to add an additional 6km to today’s walk, to finish at Wreck Beach. Please discuss doing this option with your guide on evening of day 1.

WALK ITINERARY

This morning, enjoy breakfast, before setting out on our day’s walk, which will be the most challenging of the tour. We will depart the lodge at 830am to enable an early start on the trail.

You will see spectacular and isolated areas of the Great Ocean Walk, traversing from Milanesia Gate to Moonlight Head on an undulating trail that is usually compact and stable.

We begin surrounded by beautiful coastal forest as we trend downhill to the isolated tranquility of Milanesia Beach, where a short wander along the sand brings us to our first climb for the day – a steady ascent on a firm track with several sets of steps. The trail continues to undulate on a generally stable surface for the full journey, dissected by gullies, featuring Rough Tree Ferns and other lush flora, as well as drier sclerophyll forests.

Our climbs regularly afford us spectacular views along the coast in both directions. An ascent of 138 steps and an additional small climb brings us to one of the official GOW campsites at Ryans Den. Typically our lunch spot, this high point provides an expansive outlook of our surrounds, and the chance to recharge our batteries for the 2nd half of today’s walk.

We mostly follow the coastline from here, heading west toward Cape Volney and beyond, alternating between high points and shady gullies, with a final stepped climb to emerge onto Moonlight Head, where we can celebrate our achievements with incredible views once again.

With our accommodation located nearby, we can take some time-out to freshen up and enjoy some afternoon tea. Later in the day, we can explore the area a little further, with a visit to nearby Wreck Beach to learn more of the local maritime history and view remnants of past shipwrecks, including well-preserved anchors.

This involves approximately 1.5km of additional walking, as well as scaling a series of 300+ steps that lead to and from the beach. Tonight after dinner, relax and enjoy reflecting on your day, and the wonderful experience you shared with your fellow hikers.

TRAIL DETAILS

6km walk. 3 hours plus breaks. Easy Grade 2.

TERRAIN

Very similar gradient to Day 1 through coastal bushland. Along this section of track, various surface treatments have been used to keep us on a firm footing. Otherwise, it is a firm compacted surface throughout as we approach the Twelve Apostles.

Several sets of stone steps are encountered, and at Gibson’s Steps, where we view the rock stacks Gog and Magog, there are around 50 steps descending to the beach.

WALK ITINERARY

After breakfast, we depart Alkina Lodge at 830am and drive a short distance west for our final walking experience of the tour: Princetown to Gibson’s Steps/12 Apostles. This dramatically beautiful final section of the walk is a fitting finale to our 3-days, starting on boardwalk that crosses the pristine wetlands of the Gellibrand River, which supports extensive bird and aquatic life.

The trail winds through coastal scrub and follows the cliff tops on varying surfaces of compacted earth or board-walked path, providing fabulous views. The spectacular vistas ultimately include the famous Apostles, rising majestically from the Southern Ocean. Created by constant erosion of the limestone cliffs over millions of years, the rugged splendour of these ancient sea-stacks is striking to the eye.

At Gibson’s Steps, we descend approximately 50 man-made steps to the beach to view the stunning limestone cliffs from below. We also experience a closer view of the impressive sea-stacks of Gog and Magog, not strictly included as Apostles, but worth a look, all the same.

On completion of our morning walk, we enjoy a spectacular helicopter flight over the Apostles and surrounding coastline a fabulous way to gain a true perspective of the grandeur of this region.

A short drive takes us to Loch Ard Gorge, where we enjoy our final lunch together on the beach, if conditions are suitable.

We then return to Melbourne via the inland route, with a short break at the little hamlet of Winchelsea, usually arriving at The Langham Melbourne at approximately 5.30pm the end of a wonderful journey.

FINISH TIME

Arrive back at The Langham Melbourne at approximately 5.30pm
